    3D City Models and urban information: Current issues and perspectives

    Considering sustainable development of cities implies investigating cities in a holistic way taking into account many interrelations between various urban or environmental issues. 3D city models are increasingly used in different cities and countries for an intended wide range of applications beyond mere visualization. Could these 3D City models be used to integrate urban and environmental knowledge? How could they be improved to fulfill such role? We believe that enriching the semantics of current 3D city models, would extend their functionality and usability; therefore, they could serve as integration platforms of the knowledge related to urban and environmental issues allowing a huge and significant improvement of city sustainable management and development. But which elements need to be added to 3D city models? What are the most efficient ways to realize such improvement / enrichment? How to evaluate the usability of these improved 3D city models? These were the questions tackled by the COST Action TU0801 “Semantic enrichment of 3D city models for sustainable urban development”.     Remote sensing of aerosol in the terrestrial atmosphere from space: new missions

    The distribution and properties of atmospheric aerosols on a global scale are not well known in terms of determination of their effects on climate. This mostly is due to extreme variability of aerosol concentrations, properties, sources, and types. Aerosol climate impact is comparable to the effect of greenhouse gases, but its influence is more dificult to measure, especially with respect to aerosol microphysical properties and the evaluation of anthropogenic aerosol effect. There are many satellite missions studying aerosol distribution in the terrestrial atmosphere, such as MISR/Terra, OMI/Aura, AVHHR, MODIS/Terra and Aqua, CALIOP/CALIPSO. To improve the quality of data and climate models, and to reduce aerosol climate forcing uncertainties, several new missions are planned. The gap in orbital instruments for studying aerosol microphysics has arisen after the Glory mission failed during launch in 2011. In this review paper, we describe several planned aerosol space missions, including the Ukrainian project Aerosol-UA that obtains data using a multi-channel scanning polarimeter and wide-angle polarimetric camera.     A user-centred approach to design Transport Interchange Hubs (TIH): A discussion illustrated by a case study in the Russian Arctic

    This paper proposes a user-centred approach to design Transport In-terchange Hubs (TIH). It is based on a literature review of existing information related to TIHs outside the domain of transport engineering, so the focus is on the building and the usage of it by its main customers: the travellers. A literature review is used to extract high level information on travellers’ needs, technical and functional requirements of TIHs, constraints and design parameters. A prod-uct development approach is used to classify and combine this data so a proper set of design specifications to better address users’ needs is proposed. The method is illustrated through an example in the Russian Arctic, an area with un-der-developed transport facilities for travellers which would benefit from high-level design specifications to address complex needs, requirements and parame-ters involved in designing for extreme climate conditions. A proof of concept, using Axiomatic Design, to develop design specifications and manage constraints is applied and discussed considering major needs involved in building in the Rus-sian Arctic including how different types of simulation tools, essential to assess performance of complex buildings, can be integrated in the early stages of the design workflow. Robust specifications, despite being part of parametric design methods, are underexplored in the architecture design domain, meaning this work can contribute to further research in how to define common design targets and objectives for different stakeholders as well as to manage the collaborative work of consultants involved in designing complex buildings

    Microscopic transport model animation visualisation on KML base

    By reading classical literature devoted to the simulation theory it could be found that one of the greatest possibilities of simulation is the ability to present processes inside the system by animation. This gives to the simulation model additional value during presentation of simulation results for the public and authorities who are not familiar enough with simulation. That is why most of universal and specialised simulation tools have the ability to construct 2D and 3D representation of the model. Usually the development of such representation could take much time and there must be put a lot forces into creating an adequate 3D representation of the model. For long years such well-known microscopic traffic flow simulation software tools as VISSIM, AIMSUN and PARAMICS have had a possibility to produce 2D and 3D animation. But creation of realistic 3D model of the place where traffic flows are simulated, even in these professional software tools it is a hard and time consuming action. The goal of this paper is to describe the concepts of use the existing on-line geographical information systems for visualisation of animation produced by simulation software. For demonstration purposes the following technologies and tools have been used: PTV VISION VISSIM, KML and Google Earth

    How efficiently educational programs prepare professionals to meet current and future challenges of transport interchanges

    The objective of this paper is to identify relevance of the existing educational programs to the skills required on job, as perceived by the stakeholders involved, such as policy makers, transport operators and service providers, academia and research sector. The research was conducted based on a questionnaire survey retrieving the knowledge gained through educational and training programs, the importance of this knowledge and its relevance to the skills required for further career pursuance. In parallel, analysis was done of various curricula offered by prominent educational institutions throughout Europe, in the context of or associated with transport interchanges. Findings indicated that there is significant deficiency of knowledge in the European policy on intermodal transportation, business models building and interchange design. Also, it was observed that there is an increasing requirement for gaining skills on sustainable development and transportation planning, decision making methodologies, data collection methods and utilization of big data for policy-making. © 2020 Institute for Transport Studies in the European Economic Integration.     The effectiveness of different methods of stabilizing thoracic skeleton in cases of floating and complicated fractures of ribs in 58 patients has been studied. The usage of combined methods of stabilizing bone fragments has been substantiated.     Building on European scientific excellence to develop an educational program on intermodal connections for Latvia and the region

    Economic and social factors, including existing trends in urban population and employment growth combined with urbanization, have led to enhanced consumption and thus, increasing freight flows in the cities. Mitigation of transport impacts has led to plans towards a more sustainable urban environment. However, managerial and regulatory barriers restrict the incorporation of technological instruments and solutions to the sustainable dimension of decision-making and planning. This paper has sought to bridge this gap by organizing an educational and training program, which involves the participation of todays and tomorrow’s researchers, decision-makers and practitioners. Towards this direction, a methodology is developed that identifies existing gaps between the transport industry and the existing research, education and training programs and converts identified requirements and gaps into training courses. The paper addresses the context of intermodal interconnections for the case of Latvia and the region for stimulating and strengthening its scientific and technological capacity by providing knowledge in the field of smart interconnecting sustainable transport networks. The 2-level gap analysis that was developed and implemented with respect to the thematic areas of (1) ‘Governance and policy development’, (2) ‘Smart solutions’, and (3) ‘Decision-making’, and the validation process that followed, has revealed several requirements that exist currently for passenger and freight interchanges and educational programs for Latvia and the region. Based on the identified educational requirements for Latvia and the region, 20 educational areas were created that resulted in 12 courses for passenger and freight transport interchanges that are going to be used for training and education in Latvia. © 2017 Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) Press
